Sound Science — How Hearing Protection Actually Works
Shooting is one of the loudest things a human ear can experience. A single gunshot peaks between roughly 140 and 165 decibels — far past the level where permanent hearing damage begins. Protection is not optional. But most buyers compare a single number on the box and stop there. Here is what actually matters.
The seal is the spec
A muff rated SNR 29 only delivers that suppression if the cushion seals completely around your ear. Break the seal — a gap at the temple arms of your shooting glasses, a hat brim under the cup, hardened old foam — and noise leaks straight in. That is why the cushion material is not a comfort feature. The cushion is the spec. Gel cushions conform around glasses instead of bridging over them, which is exactly where standard foam fails.
Active vs passive protection
Passive muffs block everything — the shot, but also range commands, your partner, and the game you're listening for. Electronic (active) protection uses microphones to amplify the world and a compressor that clips only the harmful peaks. SNR vs NRR — two numbers, one truth
Europe and the US rate hearing protection with different lab methods. SNR (Single Number Rating, standard EN 352) is the European figure; NRR (Noise Reduction Rating, ANSI S3.19) is the American one. The same physical muff scores differently under each method — typically a few dB apart. Neither is "more true"; they are different test protocols.

What SNR 29 means in practice
Under lab conditions, SNR 29 reduces the sound level reaching your ear by up to 29 dB. Real-world protection depends on fit and seal — which is the point of everything above. A well-sealed muff at your ear beats a higher-rated muff with a glasses gap.
Common questions
Is SNR the same as NRR? No — different regions, different lab standards, same purpose. A muff's SNR figure is usually a few dB higher than its NRR figure.
Do electronic muffs protect when the batteries die? Yes — the passive shell and seal keep blocking noise; you only lose amplification.
Is more amplification better? No. Over-amplified ambient sound startles and fatigues you. The VX1 PRO is tuned to 6x deliberately.
